Using the directions that she had gotten from Kay, Emily headed over to pick her up. It was a little early, but that would give her time to get a look at Kay’s apartment. She found the place easily and parked next to Kay’s car. She saw Kay standing in her doorway and walked over. It was the first time she had seen Kay wearing casual clothes and she looked good. She had on a tight-fitting black T-shirt that showed her slim, muscular build. She was wearing a Red Sox hat. The closer she got, the more flustered Emily became. They had always had something from work to talk about when they got together. She didn’t know how to handle the attraction she was feeling, so she started talking, hoping that Kay wouldn’t notice.

“Hi. I guess I found your apartment. It looks like you have a nice place.”

She knew she might be talking too much, but Emily was too nervous to stop. “I like your hat. You look really good in a hat. I am one of those people who looks ridiculous in a hat. I always have. It’s embarrassing really. Are you a Red Sox fan?”

“Yes, I like the Red Sox.”

Emily’s embarrassment grew. She was probably making a fool of herself. She needed to calm down before Kay ran screaming back into her apartment. She would try a new topic. “So, where did you get your shirt? It’s nice.”

“Uh, I got it online,” Kay answered. “Would you like to come in for a minute?”

Emily nodded and followed her into her apartment.

The apartment was situated on two levels. The downstairs had one large open room with the kitchen along the back and the living room area in the front. There was a bathroom in the back corner. The living area had a comfortable linen colored couch and chair with an oversized ottoman. Kay had some colorful prints of nature scenes hanging on the walls and the apartment had a very relaxed, peaceful look.

“This is it,” Kay said. “There are two bedrooms upstairs and a bathroom. I use one of the bedrooms for an office.”

“This is really nice. I love the view you have of the river.”

“There’s a deck off the kitchen. I like to sit out there when the weather is good. Do you want to have something to drink and sit for a minute with me?”

Emily’s mouth was feeling very dry. “Sure, that would be good.”

Kay got them each a glass of water and they sat out on the deck. “We should probably leave soon, huh?”

Emily took a sip from her glass. Her hands were shaky and she dropped her glass, spilling water down the front of her shirt and onto the deck. She jerked back and looked at Kay apologetically. “God, I’m really sorry. I think I told you before that I’m not the most graceful person.”

“It’s not a big deal. It’s just water.” Kay stood up. “Hold on and I’ll be right back.”

Kay went into the house and came back onto the deck a moment later with some paper towels.
